Bluetooth Voice Commands Bluetooth Voice Commands

If your vehicle is equipped with voice-recognition technology, you can use voice commands to make calls, control your infotainment system and work with Siri®† or Google Assistant™ on your compatible Bluetooth®† -connected phone, depending on which kind of features your vehicle supports. Here are some tips for getting the most from the system.

Getting started

You’ll follow different steps depending on what kind of voice recognition your vehicle has. Here’s a quick look at how they work.

If your vehicle is equipped with available embedded voice recognition:

  1. Press and release (short press) the Push-to-Talk button on your steering wheel to use the embedded voice recognition features.
  2. If your compatible phone is paired with the system, press and hold (long press) the Push-to-Talk button on your steering wheel to talk directly to your phone’s voice assistant, like Siri or Google Assistant.
  3. If you don’t have a phone paired, press and hold the Push-to-Talk button on your steering wheel to get instructions for how to pair.

If your vehicle does not have embedded voice recognition:

  1.  If your compatible phone is paired with the system, press the Push-to-Talk button on your steering wheel to talk directly to your phone’s voice assistant, like Siri or Google Assistant.
  2. If you don’t have a phone paired, press the Push-to-Talk button on your steering wheel to get instructions for how to pair.

There’s more information below about how to use each type of voice recognition.

Using Embedded Voice Recognition

1. If your vehicle has embedded voice recognition features, you can use them by pressing and releasing the Push-to-Talk button on the steering wheel.

Voice Command icon.

2. The audio system will mute and you’ll hear a voice prompt. Wait for the beep before you say a command.

3. Say what you want the system to do. You can speak naturally or in direct commands. Your vehicle touchscreen will display example commands while the voice session is active.

4. For full functionality, make sure your smartphone is paired and connected and your contact list is downloaded. Say “Pair phone” to begin the pairing process; you can also pair the phone manually using the vehicle touchscreen.

5. Say “Switch phone” to make calls from a different Bluetooth-connected phone from your paired devices list.

To Get Help

  1. If your vehicle has embedded voice recognition, after the prompt, say “Help.”
  2. A list of help topics will display on your vehicle touchscreen.

To Make Calls Using Embedded Voice Recognition

  1. Say either the first or last name of your contact. If there are multiple numbers, add a descriptor to the end. For example: “Call Vanessa at work,” “Call Mom at home” or “Call Jack on mobile.”
  2. If the system finds multiple contacts with the same name (e.g., “John” or “Cathy”), it will list the options and ask which one you would like to select.
  3. You can also direct the system to dial a number: “Call 313-555-4321.”
  4. Say “Voicemail” to play back voicemail messages.

If you are using Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™, you can’t use the embedded voice recognition to make phone calls. Instead, you can use Siri or Google Assistant, if your vehicle has those features. See those instructions below.

To Play Audio Using Embedded Voice Recognition

  1. Say “Play” and then the name of the song, album, artist, genre, podcast, audiobook, chapter or episode you want. The system will search any Bluetooth- or USB -connected device, as well as your vehicle radio for a match. For example: “Play Amazing Grace” or “Play Blues."
  2.  If these commands don’t work, try using direct commands. For example, say: “Play song,” “Play artist,” etc. and wait for the prompt. Then say the specific song, artist, etc.
  3. To play a radio station, you can also say “Tune to” and then the station. For example: “Tune to AM 760” or “Tune to Sirius channel 34.”

If you are using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can’t use the embedded voice recognition to play audio. Instead, you can use Siri or Google Assistant, if your vehicle has those features. See those instructions below.

To Navigate Using Embedded Voice Recognition

  1. First, make sure your smartphone is paired and connected and your contact list is downloaded.
    • For Apple® devices, your contact list downloads and synchronizes automatically each time you turn on your vehicle. For Android™ devices, you will be asked for permission to access contacts before they can be downloaded. Note: To protect user privacy, the contacts information is only available when your phone is connected and selected as the in-use device.
  2. If your vehicle has navigation, you can say “Directions to” or “Navigate to” and then the name of the destination contact, address, intersection or point of interest. For example: “Directions to John’s,” “Navigate to 111 Main Street” or “Directions to the Museum of Natural History.”
  3. If these commands don’t work, try saying “Take me to Place of Interest,” “Find address,” “Destination contact” or “Navigation” and the system will walk you through by asking additional questions.

If you are using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you can’t use the embedded voice recognition to ask for directions. Instead, you can use Siri or Google Assistant, if your vehicle has those features. See those instructions below.

To Activate Siri or Google Assistant

1. If your vehicle is compatible with Siri® or Google Assistant™, you can use them to issue voice commands. To do this, press and HOLD the Push-to-Talk button until Siri or Google Assistant comes on.

Voice Command icon.

2. Issue commands like you normally do when speaking with Siri or Google Assistant, like playing audio, making phone calls or asking for directions.

Q&As

I pressed and released the Push-to-Talk button on the steering wheel but nothing happened. Why?

For some types of voice recognition, your compatible phone must be connected to the system via Bluetooth or USB.

When I use Siri in the vehicle, why don’t the responses show up on my phone screen?

For safety reasons, Siri requests that require a visual response on the phone screen, such as a web search, can’t be completed while you’re driving. Usually, Siri will let you know that the request can’t be completed. Also, when you’re using Apple CarPlay, your phone screen will be locked out to help minimize distractions.

What do I do if my vehicle won’t recognize my phone?

First, restart your phone and reconnect to Bluetooth in your vehicle. If that doesn’t work, you may need to delete and pair again.
