Media Ports and Console Storage Media Ports and Console Storage Media Ports and Console Storage

The media ports and USB ports available in your vehicle let you plug in your compatible devices to charge them on the go. Some ports also let you listen to the music, audiobooks and podcasts you have stored on the device, through the infotainment system.

Introducing Your Media Ports and Console Storage

There may be a few different types of media and USB ports in your vehicle. The types and location is different depending on your vehicle, but some of the places you might find them include in your centre console, in the storage compartment under the front armrest, on the back of the centre console or in the cargo area.

Some of the ports can only be used to charge your devices. Others can also be used to access the files on the device through the infotainment system. See your Owner’s Manual to see how the ports in your specific vehicle work.

Here are the types of media and USB ports you might have:

  • USB-A port: A traditional rectangular port

  • USB-C port: Slightly smaller than a USB-A port, the USB-C port is compatible with many newer devices; it also offers faster data transfer and charging. These ports are reversible, so it doesn’t matter which way you plug in

  • SD card reader: On some vehicles, this thin slot is used to support your vehicle’s navigation system (if it has one)

  • Auxiliary jack: A small circular port only used for audio playback (also known as aux input)

Ways to Use the Media and USB Ports

Plug your compatible device into a port. For the best experience, always use the cable provided by your device manufacturer.

Here are some examples of the things you might be able to do:

  • Charging: Plugging into the USB ports lets you charge your device while on the go (your vehicle must be ON or in ACCESSORY mode in order to charge)

  • Audio streaming: On some models, you can stream music from your compatible device after it’s plugged in. How you access the audio content varies by vehicle, so check your Owner’s Manual for instructions

  • On some infotainment systems, your device appears as one of the source selections in your Audio app (tap MORE, then USB to find it). Then, you can tap BROWSE to access your playlists, songs, albums, etc., on the infotainment screen

  • Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™: If your vehicle has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can connect your phone in order to use your phone’s maps, make calls, send and receive messages, enjoy music and more, through the infotainment screen

  • Rear Seat Entertainment: If your vehicle has a Rear Seat Entertainment system, the ports in the second row may be used to connect devices to it. Plugging into these ports lets you see your content on the rear screens. Some systems only allow connection through HDMI.

Q&As

Why is my phone charging slowly after I plug it into my vehicle?

The ports in the vehicle provide power to charge your devices, but how fast they charge depends on your device’s capabilities.
